What is the best way too disable this feature (currently it shows on the left of the screen) as it does not correctly display on my mobile site.

None yet. I have not choosen what template (considering tap theme vs mobile joomla) to use for my mobile version yet. Do you suggest using a module and activating it for one template instead of using plugin?

Yes,

That is exactly what I was going to suggest. Then you can put this into the css for the module if you wish to display the buttons on the side:

position: fixed; left: 50%; margin-left: -570px: top:180px;

you can adjust the left margin and top margin to your taste.
